Teacher Introduction

Greetings from Toronto, Ontario Canada! My name is Ashlyn Young, my students refer to me as Ms. Young. I am currently teaching at Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute in Toronto, Ontario. Our school system runs from September to June. The year is broken down into 2 halves where each half is called a semester, thus we have two semesters in each year. Each semester students take 4 different courses and teachers can teach up to 3 different subjects. This semester at Cedarbrae I am teaching 2 classes of grade 11-university preparation biology and one section of applied grade 10 science.

Here in Canada, at least in Ontario, the teaching profession is extremely competitive in terms of being accepted into a teacher’s college. From there it’s actually a pretty tough market right now for being able to get a job. In Ontario there is definitely a large surplus of teachers compared to the number of available jobs. Once you obtain a job though I would say your career is pretty secure in terms of always having work, which is a definite plus.

My background is extensively in the Animal Sciences and Genetics field as I studied Animal Biology at the University of Guelph, which is located in Guelph, Ontario.  This is currently my 3rd year of teaching. I graduated from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in 2009 with teaching qualifications in biology and general science. Since then I have increased my teachable subjects to Chemistry, Special Education, and have also finished my Honour’s Specialist in Biology, which enables me to take on a leadership role at my school.

At Cedarbrae I am also actively involved in our extra-curricular and professional development community. I am the head coach of the junior girls volleyball team, a teacher facilitator of our Eco Club, supervising teacher for our student science fair, as well as an acting member in our teacher-run professional learning community group. In previous years I have coached girls softball and swimming and have run after school programs for examination study skills prep.

I would definitely say that Cedarbrae is unique in the variety of culture and diversity it attracts and sustains within the community. With the extensive diversity, students are able to broaden their cultural knowledge base and communication skills on an interpersonal level, which I feel, can better prepare them for the workforce. With rich diversity brings many exciting opportunities and experiences for the students to par-take in and engage themselves in before, during, and after school.

My students have collaborated during class time and have prepared a series of introduction paragraphs and pictures outlining some interesting facts about Cedarbrae, our community, Toronto, sports and culture, as well as Canadian culture that will follow early this week. My students are extremely excited to be involved in this amazing opportunity and can’t wait to meet with all of you!

Most Sincerely,

Ashlyn Young

Canadian Culture

Greetings! From your friends in Canada, eh! Canada occupies a great portion of North America, has a diverse history! Our lives are filled with days celebrating different cultures. The traditional Canadian holidays are Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Canada Day. Canada is a very diverse country and thus many cultures also celebrate many other holidays like Diwali and so on. Our two national spots are Hockey and Lacrosse; we all enjoy watching these spots and playing them. Canada has two official languages; which are French and English.  We believe one of the greatest things in Canada is free health care; who doesn’t like anything that is free. We have a craving for maple syrup which is kind of iconic thing in Canada. Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world; this comes with benefits like the great lakes and large forest.  We love camping, hunting and ice fishing. We also celebrate Canada day which one the most important days for us.  We believe we have a great education system which is why we can communicate with you guys today.  In conclusion Canada is a country that celebrates diversity and freedom.

Community

Our community is unique in so many different ways. We have a very diverse society filled with many different cultures. The community we live in is very welcome to various kinds of people. Everyone is very accepting. We have lots of community centres, a variety of places to shop, many libraries, and several means of transportation; such as cars, motorbikes, buses, trains, subways, taxis, and airplanes. There are several types of housing. For instance, we have houses, apartment buildings, condominiums, shelters, and group homes. Transportation is safe in Canada. We have restrictions like speed limits, traffic signals, and rules of the road that keep us safe. We love our community and everything it enriches us with. Now it’s your turn to tell us about your community. Is it similar to ours, or are there major differences?

Sports in Toronto

Our city is filled with a variety of sports from basketball to cricket!   We enjoy playing all different kinds of sports; however, we are recognized for some of our national teams such as: Toronto Maple Leaf for hockey, Toronto FC for soccer, Toronto Blue Jays, our baseball team, The Toronto Argonauts, our football team, and Toronto Raptors, which is our basketball team. Some of our landmarks are our sports centers where national teams from all over the country  or the U.S come to watch, support, and play for their team. The Air Canada Centre and Rogers Centre are just some of our landmarks that hold thousands of people located in the downtown of Toronto.

Multiculturalism in Canada

In Canada we are all a part of a huge united culture. Everyone here is different and we embrace new cultures and religion. Everyone wears different clothing and respects them. We also have different religious houses of prayers such as temples, churches, mosques, etc.  One of the significant parts of Canadian culture is the many languages we have.  Our two main languages are English and French but we also speak other languages.  The other languages we have are Hindi, Punjabi, Chinese, Tamil, and many more. Diversity in Canada is a very important to us. It lets us express who we are. We are all different but still the same. In Cedarbrae we have a Multicultural day. This is when we show the different cultures represented at Cedarbrae by performing dances, songs, and etc. at the school. The students also dress up in their cultural/religious clothing and the school puts up a fashion show to show the diversity at Cedarbrae. In conclusion, multiculturalism plays a huge role in our Canadian society.

The Greater Toronto Area

Bienvenue and greetings from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), where every street displays our diverse culture.  The population of our enormous city is 3.5 million. That’s more than ten percent of the total population of Canada! Toronto is the central city of the GTA, along with four regional municipalities surrounding it; Durham, Halton, York and Peel.  Toronto is the capital city of Ontario, one of the provinces of Canada, and is the largest city in Canada.  Toronto is filled with many tourist attractions and entertainments, such as the CN Tower, Air Canada Center, The Rogers Centre, Eaton Centre and Wonderland.  Along with that Yonge Street in Downtown Toronto, is the largest street in the world.  The Toronto Transmit Commission (TTC) also known as the Rocket is a transit system that takes us throughout the GTA.  Little Italy, Chinatown and Jerard Street are just a few of the many places that bring in worldly cultures.  The GTA, is filled with regions that welcome different ethnics , race and religion into its community.

Our School: Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute

Cedarbrae is one of the largest schools in Toronto.  Over 1400 students attend Cedarbrae and approximately 70 teachers teach.  Cedarbrae specializes in French Immersion, Visual and Performing Arts Programs.  Cedarbrae is very multicultural and has many sports and clubs with a wide range of opportunities to express and promote your talents.   There are many clubs at Cedarbrae that have different motives and objectives. The largest organizations are SAC (Student Activity Council) and CAA (Cedarbrae Athletic Association) which have hundreds of members. The clubs in Cedarbrae are mostly involved in organizing funds and entertaining events like the multicultural show and celebrating different cultural holidays.  There are many events that occur throughout the school year like dances and fundraisers.  One of the dances that we have is called Semi Formal; which usually takes place during the month of February; which is a dinner and dance.  Multiculturalism is among the most important and unique aspect of our school which makes us all feel proud to be part of Cedarbrae. In fact the majority of the students are from backgrounds other than Canadian. We have students from countries all over the world.  Cedarbrae celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.
