Question:

a) Recreate

b) Refusing

c) Refill

What is your contribution to help save the environment by reusing, reducing, recycling and… (4th R)…?

We have done some research and we think that the fourth R that can fit in the other Rs is RECREATE. Our contribution towards helping the environment by reusing, reducing, recycling and recreate is as follows

1. Recreate

This helps the environment by bringing up areas which have destroyed. This areas include areas that have been gone through massive deforestation, pollution and erosion. Due that recreate helps by coming up with measures that take the places to the previous conditions.

2. Reusing

When we where on with our research we found out that is the most powerful R. This where products can be used for more than one purpose for example in areas where water is scars. The water used for washing the house can also be used to water the plants in the garden. This makes good use and economical use of the water preventing. wastage.

3. Recycling

This helps the environment in many ways this include the recycling of the polythene papers into more useful products . This is necessary because it reduces the cost of dumping the papers and also the hips of papers that are seen in the streets which destroys it look. It also makes the raw material use for making some products like the bags which are obtained from the recycling process.

4. Reducing

This kind of R is effective in the agricultural sector where the amount of fertilizers are reduced. This in turn reduces the amount of chemicals carried to the water bodies. This helps to keep the water free from pollution making the water animals to be safe and also the people using the waters.

Keep your eyes wide open and do something to protect until is not too late!

Recreate:

We decided that the 4th R needed to save the planet is Recreate. Without recreating our world we would be unable to sustain it. The three main ways to “Recreate” is to plant trees that are lost in deforestation, restore polluted bodies of water and to recreate damaged habitats destroyed by human and natural forces.

Planting Trees:

Check out this website! Reasons why planting trees are important to recreating our world.

Recreating Polluted Bodies of Water:

How our habitats are being destroyed, and ways we can recreate the damaged habitats!http://water.epa.gov/polwaste/nps/wetmeasures/index.cfm#06

Habitat Recreation:

Habitat restoration involves more than just science, it also involves economics, politics, and often a lot of help from volunteers! Restoration is not often a quick fix, it may take years to re-establish something close to the original habitat, and the restored area will usually need to be monitored and managed long after the initial work is finished. Recreating a habitat can increase the biodiversity and ultimately lead to financial benefits of restoration including increased of visitors to the area or in improved ‘services’ provided by the habitat such as the reduction in flooding.

To us the 4th R is Respect.

We have to respect our environment since it is our home. Just like how we clean our rooms we need to learn to have a safe and clean environment. We have abused our environment for generations, so we should start respecting our environment by doing things such as not littering. Another example would be selective cutting would be a better choice rather than cutting all the trees in one place.

Reusing

Instead of buying the same material you have at home; you can reuse the old material instead of buying the material you already have. You can reuse the old materials such as water bottles and shopping bags.

Reducing

The most effective way to reduce waste is to not create it in the first place. Reduce the amount of paper you use. Also try to avoid the use of plastics but if you must then only use what you need. The benefits of preventing waste go beyond reducing reliance on other forms of waste disposal. Preventing waste also can mean economic savings for communities, businesses etc.

Recycling

Recycling takes a lot less money, much lesenergy, and saves a lot of the Earth’s natural resources; thereby helping the environment. Recycling is a great way to get involved and help the environment. You could start right at home by keeping waste and reusable items (such as water bottles) separate.

My contribution to help save the environment by recycling includes; recycling in my household, in my garden and in my school. The most basic way to recycle in my home is to separate our garbage, we own a blue bin for recyclable plastics, glass and boxes. The green box is used for strictly paper recycling. The green bin is used for compost. Lastly, a garbage bin for those things that cannot be recycled.
In my household, we do efficient recycling; this means that we try to buy electronics that are eco-friendly. Like, simply purchasing fluorescent light bulbs instead of incandescent, or looking for EPEAT-certified (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) products. We also know that recycling electronics after we are done with them are very important, cell phones, computers, televisions and even batteries. These products have toxic chemicals and many other unhealthy chemicals that harm those who are exposed and the environment. Instead of throwing them out in the garbage, there is an electronic disposal bin that we visit.
We also tend to buy recycled items, simply purchasing recycled paper; it’s as good as new! For cleaning, we try our best to stay away from hazardous materials, because it is hard to recycle hazardous waste. Non-toxic products clean just as well.
In Toronto, a lot of people own houses, and are forced to mow their lawn. After mowing the lawn, if we leave the grass cuttings on the grass instead of throwing them out, these cuttings will turn into nutrients and act as a fertiliser in the soil. This is a type of recycling in the garden.
My school promotes recycling and other eco-friendly gestures on a daily basis. We always recycle, every class, or in the hallways there are recycling bins. I recycle my old cardboard binders and folders, if they are in good condition, I reuse them. Every Friday morning, during first period, we have a “Lights-Out Friday”, meaning we turn off all the lights, and open the curtains.

My contribution to help save the environment by refusing includes buying local products, buying biodegradable products, and refusing plastics.
By refusing to buy products from all over the world, I save the environment. For example, if I was to buy bananas from Mexico, that means that someone had to transport these bananas; across oceans, continents and countries. Therefore, to get my bananas, someone had to burn fossil fuels, petroleum etc. By refusing to buy from Mexico, I saved the world from more carbon dioxide.
Many household cleaners contain harmful chemicals like chlorine and phosphates. These chemicals are dangerous when they are flushed down a drain because they end up in the river – we damage our water supply. Refusing these cleaning products and choosing biodegradable cleaners is how I help save the environment.
Many of us know the issue with water bottles, use them once and throw them out. Every 5 minutes, 2 million plastic bottles are thrown away, using 750 million gallons of crude oil per year. Water bottles are made from plastics, and plastics are made from petroleum. By refusing to buy water bottles and choosing thermos water bottles I reduce the burning and mining of petroleum.
Same issue with plastic bags, we use them once or a couple times and throw them out. Plastic bags are made from plastic, which is again petroleum. As of June 1st 2009, the municipal government (City of Toronto) have passed a law concerning plastic bags. Each time consumers buy something, it costs 5 cents ($0.05) per plastic bag. This law encourages people to use reusable bags, and helps save the environment. When my family and I are shopping for grocery, we know to bring reusable bags.

A film made in the United States about the truth about water bottles.

Reuse and Reduce

We live in a country where is it every easy for use the 4 r’s reduce reuse recycle and refuse. Reducing house hold waste can help save the environment and your wallet. For an example a way you can reuse is, buy reusing water bottles instead of just throwing them out into the garbage. Another way you can reuse is by buying the toothbrush and razors where you just have to change the head instead of throwing the whole tooth brush or razor out. You can reuse the plastic bags you get from the grocery store, Either bring them back to the store and reuse them for your next shopping trip or use them for other purposes such as putting your garbage in, or carrying lunch in it. Reuse packaging and boxes is another way to save the environment. You can either reuse them for mailing other packages or use them for gift giving instead of buying gift boxes. A lot of families tend to use paper plates to eat, but instead of using paper plates you can use plastic one, after you done with those you can wash and reuse them. Also instead of always buying new batteries you can just buy reusable batteries, this will saves you money and save the environment. There are many ways to reduce your waste intake as well such as changing your light bulbs to energy saving ones. Also there’s a lot of ways you can reduce your carbon imprint, you can unplug items you’re not currently using. You can buy organic and local. You can also car pool. There are many other ways you can reduce and reuse these are just a few.

The fourth “R” can be rephrase into several terms, but we prefer the term repair as was suggested by the environmentalist Wangari  Maathai (deceased)  of Kenya, a 2004 noble peace prize winner. We believed that her points in the fourth “R”-Repair are very paramount. When recycle, reduce than we must be willing to repair and then reuse.

In Liberia, we have not reached the point of utilizing the three Rs. We do not have recycling companies and there is little publicity on why we should recycle. Our streets, rivers and public places are crowded with empty bottles, plastic etc. As we read out questions and attempt to research for our answers, we learn a great deal about the three Rs which seem to be new concepts for the environmental community in Liberia. We asked an Environmentalist about why we are not concern about recycling. His response was we are gradually get to that point, especially when we have more companies that will  be able to Repair recycle materials for reuse.

We have realized that there are a lot more to be done about the four Rs, starting with Recycling. The environmentalist gave us a simple example, like if we drink from a synthetic rubber bottle we are advice to recycle it, bag it and send it to a company that would repair and refill. But Liberia has not reached that point yet. We hope to be a part of the revolution to campaign for the four “R”s in Liberia.

After a brief research on what the ice age which happened 11,000 years ago we have come to a reckoning that the ice age left a big blemish which we think will help us arrive on the answer about the fourth R.

We after a thorough scrutinization have come to conclude that the fourth R is Refill. We think it is refill because the ice age created trenches when the ice melted under warm temperature. Thus filling these chasms will mean refilling, that is one reason we think the answer is refill.

Another reason is that when the ice melted, the water beneath evaporated causing a loss of water, thus pumping sea water into dry water bodies will mean refilling, that is again one reason why we think the answer is refill.

We didn’t choose recreate because; a lane man can’t create some natural things like trees, water, sand etc to help conserve the environment.

We didn’t choose refuse because; a lane man can’t refuse the act of cutting down trees.

We  will tell you some tips that we do  to  help save environment by reusing, reducing, recycling  and recreate:

  • Keep your cell phones, computers, and other electronics as long as possible.
  • Donate or recycle them responsibly when the time comes. E-waste contains mercury and other toxics and is a growing environmental problem.
  • Recycle old cards by using the front panel as a post card.
  • Plastic soda bottle uses: Make a disposable funnel from the top half Cut a scoop from the bottom half, Or use the bottom half as a plant "greenhouse."
  • Best use for an empty pump top handsoap dispenser: Fill with liquid soap detergent.
  • Store onions in old pantyhose or nylons.
  • Take shorter showers to reduce water use.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle
