Question:
Are people in your country who are developing projects for supporting the environmental sustainability?
What these projects involve?
Our country is Kenya and people in this nation are evolved in developing projects for supporting the environment. The projects involves the following;
1) Planting of trees
This activity is usually done by the Green Belt Movement .This group was founded by the late Wangari Mathai. She was an environmental lover and planted mare than one million trees before dyeing. She went ahead to open a web site where all the activities that she did can be seen globally
http://www.greenbeltmovement.com
2) Conservation of wild life
This is done by the government through the ministry of forests. The main purpose to do so is to protect the endangered species of animals and plants. This is effectively implemented by the Kenya wildlife services which are located near forest areas. They also advertise the animals found in the country through they website http://www.kanyawildlife.com
3) Setting up of biogas plants
Biogas is a gas that can be used as a fuel. The gas is produced from dead decaying materials and is environmentally friendly. The setting up of the plant is usually done by the foreign visitors. An example is the biogas plant in Goibei Girls that was set up by a German visitor to Kenya in the year 2008. This helps the use of wood as the main fuel thus reducing the rate by which deforestation is taking place.
4) Use of energy saving jikos
The energy saving jikos are modern improved jikos that use less wood and even others use sawdust to cook By invention of this jikos less fuel is therefore needed to cook thus reducing the ecological foot print of the earth biosphere. This means that the rate of carbon dioxide emitted in the air is reduced greatly. The ozone layer destruction is then reduced preventing the ultra violent rays reaching the earth.
5) Recycling firms are being made
Pollution from polythene papers are vast in the country but due to technology many ways of recycling them have been invented. This is through coming with firms that can use the papers to make more useful products thus reducing the pollution brought about by the papers.

Are people in your country developing projects for supporting environmental sustainability?
Canada has a multifold of initiatives that focus on preserving the environment and development in a sustainable manner. These projects range from the local level to the corporate level, in sustainable practices that are founded upon ecological forethought.
What do these projects involve?
Environment Canada is the most prominent organization developing projects for supporting environmental sustainability. They are working towards creating sustainable development – defined as the process of developing land, cities, businesses and communities so that our current needs are met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
They have concentrated their efforts on 5 main focuses – air, climate change, environmental emergencies, nature, pollution and waste and water.
Air
Environment Canada has broken down air pollution into four main categories – air contaminants, persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals and toxics. These categories include issues such as smog, acid rain, indoor air pollution, land use, and transboundary movement of air pollutants.
Pollutants and air quality is tracked in order to understand how air quality is changing and the potential impacts on our health and environment. Provinces and territories monitor air pollution across Canada with networks of air quality measurement stations. Scientists and decision makers use this information to track and understand the changes in our air quality, determine the effectiveness of air quality regulations and identify new concerns. Emissions reporting collect air pollution produced by industrial activities when the source is a single, identifiable source (such as a factory smokestack). The Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA 1999) requires industrial facilities to report this information yearly. This pollutant release data is compiled into emission inventories, used to understand sources of industrial pollution in Canada and the effectiveness of regulations.
Climate change
“The Government of Canada supports efforts to protect the environment by developing policies and programs, conducting scientific research, and working with other government departments, the provinces, territories and international partners in the fight against climate change.”
Environmental emergencies
Through Environmental Emergencies Divisions located centrally in Quebec (with 5 regional offices located in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver), Environment Canada’s mission is to reduce the frequency and consequences of environmental emergencies involving the unplanned, uncontrolled or accidental release of hazardous substances such as oils or chemicals. Environmental Canada’s Emergencies Program focuses efforts on the prevention, response and preparedness of pollution incidents related to releases or spills of oils and chemicals.
Nature
Environment Canada aims to protect Canadian nature through several initiatives. Initiatives are grouped into the categories of biodiversity, ecosystem initiatives, migratory birds, species at risk, CITES (convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora) and Wildlife Habitat. They aim to preserve, protect and restore our natural riches.
Pollution and waste
Environment Canada is attempting to protect the environment while coping with the unprecedented growth, higher living standards, accelerated use of natural resources, increased production and spreading urbanization of our time. All this activity creates more waste and pollution. Environment Canada manages pollution, works towards prevention and reduction while educating on Acts, Regulations and Agreements.
Water
Canada is one of the highest water users per capita in the world. Environment Canada is trying to manage Canada’s water resource because it makes up 7% of the worlds renewable fresh water. The have programs concerning Great Lakes, St Lawrence, Lake Simcoe, Lake Winnipeg, Water Efficiency, Water quality Monitoring, Wastewater and water science & technology.
The Environment and Sustainable Development Indicators (ESDI) Initiative has formed a set of six indicators that track the progress Canada has made in terms of sustainability measures. The six sustainability indicators are:
- · Air quality in terms of ground-level ozone
- · Freshwater quality in terms of meeting government criteria
- · Greenhouse gas emissions
- · Forest cover to track the extent of our forests
- · Extent of wetlands in Canada
- ·
National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy (NRT) has made great strides in finding sustainable pathways that incorporate economic stability and environmental preservation. The NRT was established to “bring leadership in the new way me must think of the relationship between the environment and the economy and the new way we must act.” Today, the NRT is the only national organization with a direct mandate from federal parliament to work with Canadians through the promotion of sustainable development and viable solutions.

There are many groups of people in Canada who are developing projects for supporting the environment. Some of the major individuals and organizations are David Suzuki, Severn Suzuki, Environment Canada, and We Canada.
David Suzuki is involved in a project called the David Suzuki Foundation, where The Foundation's priorities are:oceans and sustainable fishing, climate change and clean energy. His objective is "to find ways for society to live in balance with the natural world that sustains us" (quoted by David Suzuki).
Among other people, David Suzuki is also involved in a project called The Trottier Energy Futures Project, this project involves a group of Canadians, working together to better our environment by ensuring that we Canadians have clean air, water, and soil.
Another person who has been involved in developing projects for supporting the environment is Severn Suzuki. She is a Canadian environmental activist, Speaker, television host and author. She has spoken around the world about environmental issues, urging listeners to define their values, act with the future in mind, and take individual responsibility. In 1992, at the age of twelve she raised money with members of ECO to attend the Earth Summit inRio de Janeiro. She presented environmental issues from a youth perspective at the summit, and is well known as the girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes.

Here in Canada, many organizations and/or companies such as Environment Canada and Greenworks Company are actively taking part in the effort to try to reduce consumption of precious resources. Environment Canada has recently released a progress report on June 16, 2011 which is called the Progress Report of the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy. This progress report tells us about the actions taken to conduct the requirements to under the Federal Sustainable Development Act. This report mainly focuses on the progress made and talks about Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators. These indicators describe to us, Canada's progress on key issues on environmental sustainability. These indicators include: thee Air and Climate (such as the air quality), the Water (such as the water quality and availability), Nature (such as protected areas and the amount of timber and wood still available in the country). Companies like Greenworks creates products which are biodegradable (able to be decomposed using bacteria) and that are less harsh on the environment after being disposed of. Items included in their product line are bleach, glass cleaner, cleaning wipes, all purpose cleaner, toilet bowl and bathroom cleaner, dish detergent, laundry detergent. These products are said to be made of natural ingredients and do not contain any harsh chemicals. These protect lakes, and large bodies of water from being filled with toxic chemicals which can kill animals and that live in or drink the water.
Another similar organization that develops projects for supporting environmental sustainability is the David Suzuki Foundation, founded by David Suzuki. David Suzuki is a Canadian award winning scientist who tries to raise awareness about environmental sustainability through several media platforms such as Television and Radio. He is also acclaimed for winning several awards in the science community worldwide.

The David Suzuki foundation is responsible for working with governments and large corporations around the world to reduce global pollution and make the environment more green. The foundation is also responsible for developing projects along with the government to maintain a sustainable environment. One such projects includes working with the government to create laws regarding limiting carbon dioxide emissions from factories and automobiles. The David Suzuki Foundation's main goals include:
Protecting our climate, Transforming the economy, Protecting nature, Reconnecting with nature, and building communities.
The David Suzuki Foundation not only promotes Environmental sustainability but also practices it. The Foundation itself practices all the ways to stay environmentally friendly. David Suzuki Foundation’s main office is positioned in an energy efficient building which is heated and cooled by using geothermal energy. The Foundation uses energy efficient appliances and green fuels. They also check and maintain their Greenhouse Gases Emission regularly.
According to the David Suzuki Foundation, in 2012, they are going to connect with The Natural Step Canada, which is also a non-profit organization which creates awareness about sustainability, and create a sustainability strategy. The plan will include all features of the foundation and further inspire Environmental Sustainability.
Canadian International Development Agency
CIDA is Canada's lead agency for development assistance.CIDA’s are also developing projects for supporting the environmental sustainability. CIDA’s goal is to support sustainable development in the developing countries. CIDA’s provides a framework for integrating environmental sustainability with social, cultural, economic and political sustainability. If sustainability is to be achieved this goals must be taken as complementary. To help countries achieve environmental sustainability in development, the CIDA will do the following: 1. Help to increase the human resource, organizations and communities to plan and implement development policies, start programs and activities that are environmentally sustainable. 2. Try to make the developing countries to strengthen the capability so they can contribute to the resolution of global and regional environmental problems.
